The 14-year-old boy who allegedly stole a school bus and crashed it into a pump at a gas station in Roseville has been released by the county to his parents Tuesday.

The Ramsey County Attorneys' Office filed a petition Tuesday morning against the teen for felony motor vehicle theft and two charges of felony criminal damage to property in connection with the theft.

The incident began around 7:50 a.m. Monday while the bus was parked on a side road with the keys inside and running near a Holiday gas station on the corner of Rice Street and Wheelock Parkway in St. Paul, according to police.

A short time later, the bus hit a gas pump as it tried to maneuver through the lot of the Shell Station on Dale Street and County Road B in Roseville, according to employees and police.

The boy told police he was thought the bus had been abandoned and wanted to return it to the charter company. He ended up driving the nearly 40-foot bus, a total of 3.5 miles.

He made his initial appearance in Ramsey County Juvenile Court on Tuesday afternoon and has been released to his parents under the supervision of the Ramsey County Intensive Supervision Program.

The program has probation officers provide monitoring and contact with juveniles. It is typically an alternative to placement in a residential correctional setting.

His next court appearance is March 6 at 1:30 p.m.
