A Duluth man says a car flew about 60 feet before hitting a boulder near Lake Superior just after sunrise on Tuesday.

KSTP's sister station WDIO says Ken Greshowak called 911 when he discovered the accident in front of his house.

Greshowak said "apparently this car got wedged between the guard rail and the woods, hit the cliff of the lake and probably catapulted 60 feet in the air and dropped probably 25 or 30 feet."

He said the victim "was in pretty tough shape. I saw that he only had a T-shirt on and I couldn't understand his speech. I thought this guy was going into shock so I took my coat off and put that on him and gave him reassurance that help was on the way."

Greshowak couldn't say how long the victim had been there but suspected several hours because the engine was cold.

"I tried to have a conversation with him and I tried to keep him conscious," he said. "I didn't want him to pass out."

The temperature at the time was in the double digits below zero.

Photos from Greshowak show emergency responders on the scene, taking the victim away from the car on a stretcher. The severity of the victim's injuries is unclear.

First responders are called to the scene of the crash near Lake Superior.
