A huge amount of stolen mail has been recovered thanks to some proactive homeowners, a KSTP viewer and good police work.

Last week KSTP shared surveillance photos taken by homeowners in the east metro who were fed up with thieves taking off with their property.

A tip caller saw our newscast and called police Friday morning when they recognized a maroon SUV in their St. Paul neighborhood. Police responded and pulled the Toyota RAV4 over.

According to Lt. Lorne Rosand with the Roseville Police Department, officers noticed a large quantity of mail in the backseat of the vehicle.

"The main suspect has confessed to the theft of mail. He admitted that he went on a 28 day stealing binge of mail throughout the metro area," said Rosand.

Rosand says USPS will take possession of all of the mail and will ultimately inform all of the victims that their mail has been stolen. He says hopefully the mail will be returned sometime soon.
