A Minnesota woman successfully sued after what she calls a horrific experience in a county jail in New Mexico. Her case is leading to major changes there.
Jan Green was arrested in Valencia County after a fight with her husband. She says the jail staff knew she had some mental health issues but they didn't know how to deal with her.
In her lawsuit, Green says she wasn't given the basics like toilet paper during her stay between 2009 and 2011. She was allegedly kept isolated and she spiraled into psychosis without proper mental health treatment. The county settled with Green for $1.6 million.
The settlement also requires the county to limit the time people can be held in the unit Green was held in to 48 hours. Also, anyone with a mental health diagnosis must see a professional at least once a week.
