A Maple Grove City Council member pleaded guilty Wednesday to stealing from her ill father.
Leann Bobleter Sargent, 63, pleaded guilty to a single count of financial exploitation of a vulnerable adult resulting from her use of her ailing father’s bank account, credit cards and other assets.
“Prosecuting these vulnerable adult crimes is hard and sad,” said Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman. “This case took a great deal of effort to investigate and prosecute, but it had to be done.”
Sargent admitted she used her father’s credit cards to buy inventory for her home handbag sales job. She said she spent more than $14,000 for the “Handbags by Miche” business. She admitted she stole more than $35,000 from her father.
Sargent’s father, Robert Bobleter, moved into Sargent’s Maple Grove home in 2010 after he was hospitalized.
Sargent said she had a personal care and a room and board agreement with her father, which paid her $2,000 a months for her care of him. In addition, Bobleter received in-home health care services which were covered by his health insurance.
Robert Bobleter died March 12, 2012.
Sargent will be sentenced for her felony plea April 7.
