MNsure officials say they are planning to hire 100 overflow staff to help alleviate the backlog with enrollment for the state’s online health insurance exchange.

More than 90,000 people have now signed up, but enrollment continues to be more in public plans versus private insurance.

While commercial enrollment is running behind projections, enrollment in Medical Assistance public insurance is ahead of projection. That's a potential problem because private enrollment is a main source of money for funding the exchange.

MNsure's goal has been to reach 70,000 private enrollments by April 1, which is the date where people without insurance coverage start facing federal tax penalties under the health care law.

On Wednesday, the MNsure Board of Directors approved spending up to $750,000 on a three-month contract to hire APAC, Inc., an Illinois-based company with a service center based in Mendota Heights.

Average wait times on the call center this week were between 7 to 14 minutes, MNsure officials said. Some callers reported waiting up to an hour this week.

MNsure’s goal is to have wait times of less than one minute, for 85 percent of the callers.

The call center contract is expected to be signed Thursday or Friday.
