A woman died after being pulled from a house fire in Columbia Heights.

The fire broke out on the 1000 block of 44 ½ Avenue Northeast just before 9 p.m. Tuesday. When firefighters arrived, they said they heard screams for help from somewhere inside the home.

The assistant fire chief tells KSTP they were knocking down flames inside the home as they searched room by room, finally finding the woman unconscious in the back bathroom of the home.

"Can you get there quickly enough? Can you get to the person in time to make sure that they survive? Those are some of the things that go through your mind en route to the call," Assistant Columbia Heights Fire Chief John Larkin said.

Three people escaped safely, and firefighters risked their lives to rescue the woman. She was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center where we've been told she died Wednesday morning.
