A bicyclist is dead after being hit by a van in Minneapolis around 9:50 p.m. Monday.
According to police, a van hit a parked car, sending it up into the sidewalk, then continued down Franklin Avenue in the right lane. The bicyclist was hit in the right lane, and the van veered up onto a snowbank, dragging the cyclist underneath the car.

"It's senseless," said Minneapolis Police PIO John Elder. "A lot of lives were changed last night at 9:51 p.m."
The fire department had to use an extrication device to lift the van off the victim, who was pronounced dead a short time later at the scene.

"This bicyclist was wearing a helmet," said John Elder, confirming the cyclist had done nothing wrong in terms of traffic violations.
Police say preliminary information indicates alcohol may have been a factor. The 49-year-old van driver, John Iverson, was arrested.
The medical examiner has not yet released the victim's identity.

Iverson was convicted in 2004 for disorderly conduct.  He could face criminal vehicular homicide for this incident, depending on the results of his toxicology report.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
