A 26-year-old man who was snowmobiling on the Apple River died when he rain into a bridge that was too low for him to go under, police said.
James R. Luke, of rural Amery, Wis., suffered head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
On Saturday at around 7:09 p.m., the Amery Police Department, Amery Fire and Rescue and Amery EMS responded to a report of a crash involving a snowmobile near Central Street and the Apple River Bridge.
Initial information provided by a witness indicated that a lone snowmobile driver was traveling north on the Apple River towards the bridge, police said. Moments later, she heard a loud crash and saw the rider lying in the snow on the north side of the bridge and called 9-1-1., police said.
Alcohol is not considered a contributing factor in this crash, police said.
