The University of Minnesota Duluth student who spent hours in sub-zero temperatures last month will be dealing with more tough news.

Alyssa Jo Lommel's mother posted on her daughter’s CaringBridge site Tuesday that doctors had to amputate all of her fingers below the knuckle.

They found more tissue damage than they had expected.

Lommels’ mother said they hoped her daughter would be able to keep one thumb.

She wrote, “On the plus side her heels looked better than expected and she would be able to put pressure on both once they healed.” They weren't sure if that tissue would heal enough for her to support her weight. So now, she should be able to walk normally once healed.

She also said Wednesday will be a tough day because her daughter hasn't been told about her hands yet.

Police say the 19 year old had been out drinking with friends Dec. 6 and was dropped off at her Duluth house around midnight. A passer-by spotted Lommel on her front stoop about nine hours later.
