Safe driving programs operated in counties and cities allow drivers to take an educational class and avoid the infraction from going on their records rather than pay a traffic fine.

However, the program in Wabasha County was deemed illegal earlier this month and shut down as the county was not sharing money collected with the state like it would if a driver were to pay a citation.

At least four lawmakers are now proposing fixes.

However, analysts say even if lawmakers are able to compromise the matter may wind up back in court.
