Police are asking for help identifying a man who sexually assaulted a woman walking to a bus stop in Minneapolis over the weekend.

According to police, a man came up behind the woman in the area of Chicago and Franklin avenues, told her he had a weapon, and to keep walking. He then sexually assaulted her.

The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Anyone with information about the assault should call the sex crimes unit at 612-673-3081.

Police also gave tips on what you can do to stay safe from sexual attacks:

  • Be cautious about your surroundings and be aware of strangers loitering around you.
  • If you are out after dark, plan and use the safest and most direct route to your destination. Whenever possible, travel in groups or pairs and be wary of isolated spots.
  • Never accept rides from strangers. If someone in a vehicle tries to get your attention, get away from the vehicle and go to the nearest safe location.
  • If you think someone is following you, switch directions and walk to a place where there are other people and immediately call 9-1-1.

If you are confronted by a potential attacker:

  • Call attention to yourself by yelling, using loud verbal commands or other noise to attract attention to the attacker.
  • Keep distance between yourself and a potential attacker by walking and/or running away. Try to place obstacles between yourself and your attacker.
  • Stall for time as much as possible, while you assess your options.

Police also said to try to report an assault as soon as possible.
