A man is dead after he was hit by a train in Big Lake Township on Monday.

According to the Sherburne County Sheriff's Office, the man was walking on the tracks when he was hit by the train at about 4:45 p.m. near the intersection of 192nd Avenue Northwest and Zebulon Street.

The train was headed northbound when it hit the man. According to the sheriff's office, the gate arms controlling the intersection were in the lowered position when the man was hit.

Passengers on the train were taken to their destinations by a combination of trains and replacement buses.

The Sherburne County Sheriff's Office and Metro Transit Police are investigating.

John Siqveland with Metro Transit tells KSTP this is the second fatality involving a Northstar train since it started service in 2009. The other incident occurred in 2010 when a BNSF worker was hit and killed by a Northstar train.

At this point, additional details have not been released.
