People across Minnesota are remembering the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday. Several events are honoring his work and his mission.

The events include the MLK Holiday Breakfast at the Minneapolis Convention Center, hosted by the General Mills Foundation and the United Negro College Fund. Gov. Mark Dayton attended the event, and political strategist Donna Brazile was the keynote speaker.

Dayton is also at the 2014 Martin Luther King Jr. March at the Minnesota History Center. It includes a re-enactment of the Civil Rights March, performances and a presentation of the colors by the Minnesota National Guard. Congressman Keith Ellison is the keynote speaker.

The day of service also includes volunteer opportunities throughout the state. Community members can show up to volunteer at any Arc’s Value Village, located in New Hope, Brooklyn Center, Richfield or St. Paul. Volunteers will work together to unpack, sort and tag all donations made in support of Arc’s programs and services for people with developmental disabilities and their families. The opportunity runs all day at any of the Arc locations.

The Ebenezer Minneapolis Campus is also looking for volunteers year-round at any of their senior housing facilities. People who perhaps know how to play an instrument or sing are especially welcome.

Government offices around the state are closed for the King holiday.
