The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has encouraging news about snowmobile fatalities halfway through the trail season.

It is hard to know exactly why the numbers are down, but a DNR manager says the mandatory snowmobile safety course plays a key role in keeping things safer on the snowmobile trails.

According to the DNR, the top three causes of snowmobile fatalities are: speed, alcohol and driving at night. A combination of the three is also prevalent in snowmobile riding deaths.

So, far this year the DNR says five people have died snowmobiling. In 2013, eight people died snowmobiling, in 2012 six died, in 2011- 13 died, and in 2010- 19 people died in snowmobile accidents.
