One man is dead after being hit by a light rail train in Minneapolis Sunday evening.

The man was hit by the train at 42nd and Hiawatha Avenue around 6 p.m.

The intersection was closed for about two hours following the incident, and light rail service was stopped in the area. Passengers on the train were transferred to a bus.

Investigators are working to determine why the man was hit by the train.

"It's standard procedure that the rail operator or bus operator involved in an accident would be taken off of their work then tested for drugs and alcohol," Metro Transit Spokesperson John Siqveland said.

We're told there were no other trains in the area and that the gates were operating. The train speed limit is 45 mph where the accident occurred.

Investigators will look at on-board computers and information stored in ground-base communication systems.

At this point additional details are not being released.
