More than 50 people were out of their homes Sunday morning after a fire broke out in a common area at an apartment complex in Cottage Grove.

The fire occurred at Woodland Park Apartments, located near Highway 61 and 80th Street, around 5 a.m. Fire department officials say the fire is "suspicious."

Some residents were treated on scene and one was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

The common area and the hallway were affected. No units were damaged. Most of the residents were allowed to return home Sunday afternoon. The Red Cross is helping several people who can't go home due to damage from the fire.

The fire is under investigation by the State Fire Marshall.
