A Monticello man faces animal cruelty and torture charges after he allegedly skinned and baked his pet cat. Twenty-eight-year-old Cody Mann told police he wanted to “try cooking it with onions,” according to the criminal complaint.
Mann's father called police to request a welfare check Monday and said his son was making "strange comments." An apartment manager from where Mann lived also called police to report a burning smell coming from Mann’s apartment, located in the 700 block of 7th Street East in Monticello.
A deputy who responded to the apartment saw smoke and smelled burned hair. The complaint states, Mann admitted he killed his cat, skinned it and began baking it in the oven to eat it.
The deputy saw the cat's body in the oven and found red smears in the bathtub along with loose hair and a steak knife. Skin and entrails were found inside a freezer in Mann’s apartment, according to the charges.
Mann has a history of drug abuse and mental illness, according to the complaint. Mann was taken to Monticello Hospital for a mental evaluation, but was later cleared and booked into jail.
