Minnesota's legislative auditor began an audit of MNsure on Tuesday as the troubled health insurance website continues to leave many people in limbo. 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS broke the story Sunday night.

As of last week, nearly 68,000 Minnesotans had successfully enrolled in insurance plans, but thousands more continue to struggle with the system. "When we promise the public that we are going to deliver and we spend a lot of money we need to keep those promises," legislative auditor Jim Nobles said.

So far, the federal government has given Minnesota $155 million to create and market the MNsure website. Nobles says his office is required by the federal government to audit the system to make sure the funds have been spent appropriately.

"We want to look at the management structure," Nobles said. "We're going to gather a lot of data on what MNsure has actually delivered and of course we're always going to weigh that against the cost."

Nobles says he hopes to complete the audit before the legislature adjourns in May.
