With bitter cold temperatures and dangerously low wind chills, this is a historic blast. So where does this cold snap rank all-time for Minnesota winters?

KSTP.com meteorologist Dave Dahl says this bone chilling cold will be in the top 20 of the coldest weather of all time in the Twin Cities.

This weather has some reminiscing about winters gone by. "It brings back memories of the good old days in Minnesota when we did have cold winters like this when you go out and it actually hurts," Dave said.

On Monday, the city of Minneapolis issued a warning for "historic and life-threatening cold." Governor Dayton had closed all of Minnesota's K-12 schools Monday for safety. Hundreds of schools decided to remain closed Tuesday.

Dave says that as of Monday night we've made it through the worst this winter can throw at us. He says while it will remain frigid overnight, it probably won't be as cold as it was Monday morning.

The all-time lowest high temperature for the Twin Cities is -20 set in 1888.

Dave says the high Tuesday will likely be below zero before a warming trend. Highs by the end of the week should be in the upper 20s.
