A former Minneapolis mayoral candidate says he was injured in an attempted theft of his iPhone at the Mall of America Thursday.
Former Hennepin County Commissioner Mark Andrew was attacked outside a Starbucks. It happened on the second floor of the Bloomington mall about 5:30 p.m., according to police.
Andrew was at a table when someone grabbed his phone and ran out. He says he chased the thief, and two young women waiting outside the Starbucks tackled him. He says one beat him on the head and face with a billy club.
Bloomington police and mall security arrived and arrested 18-year-old Letajia Shapree Cutler Cain of Brooklyn Park and the 17-year-old girl of Minneapolis.
Shapree Cutler was charged with aggravated robbery and assault, according to the Hennepin County Attorney's Office.
“People ought to be able to sit and have a cup of coffee without fear of assault,” said attorney Mark Freeman about the attack. “These two will be charged and prosecuted to the absolute fullest extent of the law.”
Andrew tells KSTP he needed nine stitches, but his injuries were "healing quickly".
He did get his iPhone back from a passer-by who found it.
Andrew said when he got home from the hospital he walked into his house, held his fist up and told his 27-year-old daughter "we won!’”
Andrew placed second to Betsy Hodges in the November election.
