A longtime St. Paul City Council Member did not mince any words, calling the proposed $250 million streetcar idea "obscene." City Council Member Dan Bostrom thinks spending nearly $50 million dollars per mile for streetcars is not a smart investment.

"I would rather give every business along the corridor $1 million, and that would generate more economic development than the streetcars," Bostrom told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS.

The city is studying the idea of adding the streetcars on West Seventh Street at Randolph, down East Seventh to Arcade.

So far, the city has only studied the idea, and it is a long way from becoming reality. Engineering and environmental impact studies would also have to be done before the project could be approved.

KSTP spoke with several local business owners along West Seventh, and they each expressed concerns about the high cost of the streetcars, and they worry parking spaces could be lost to make room for the streetcars.

The public gets a chance to make its opinion known at a public hearing Jan. 24.
