Jake Gale, a native Minnesotan, has traveled the world the past 12 years as a civilian working for the Department of Defense in places like Iraq and Afghanistan.

While Gale has never been homeless he understands what it's like to lose a sense of belonging.

It's why he's on a mission now to help the homeless.

Gale plans to hike the Appalachian Trail, a more than 2,000 mile journey he hopes will generate awareness and money for People Serving People, a shelter serving homeless children and families.

Gale is accepting donations and hopes to raise a total of $21,800 or approximately $10 per mile hiked.

You can learn more about Gale, his hike, and his effort to help the homeless on his blog.
