Josh Freeman will not get another chance to play for the Vikings this season.
Vikings Coach Leslie Frazier said the team will start quarterback Matt Cassel for the game against the Detroit Lions on Sunday. Christian Ponder will be the backup.
The announcement came after the Vikings lost 42-14 at Cincinnati last Sunday.
Frazier said Cassel, along with the rest of the offense, should have done a better job protecting the ball. On nine third-down attempts, Cassel went 0-for-8. He had an interception and the first-quarter sack-fumble.
Frazier said this last game will give the coaches a chance to look at Cassel more. He has played in eight games this season and has started in five.
Freeman was let go from Tampa Bay earlier this season. He was reportedly heavily recruited by several teams in the league before choosing to sign a 1 year, $3 million contract with Minnesota.
He started one game for the team on Oct. 21. The team lost 23-7 against the New York Giants.
