You can give the gift of life this holiday season by donating blood.

The need typically goes up during the winter months because fewer donors make the time to give while shopping and celebrating.

To help fill the need, Centennial High School will sponsor a drive Friday in Circle Pines. The drive starts at 8:15 a.m. and is expected to last until 2:15 p.m.

The school leads the state in the number of students who donate blood.

While the goal is to have 250 students and staff donate 187 pints of blood, which is enough to help more than 500 people, the community is invited to help out, too.

Centennial High School Principal Tom Breuning said by 1:15 p.m., 130 pints of blood had been collected and the school was on pace to meet their goal.
