Ask anyone in Minnesota and chances are they were in a Target store within the last week. We're learning 40 million Target shoppers may have become victims of a nation-wide data breach regarding credit card numbers.

Target is acknowledging somehow, someone gained access to credit and debit card numbers the store collects with a single swipe of your card.

Target shopper Tony Pelez used his Visa to stock up for the holiday. But after today, he's carrying cash.

"Computer hackers are getting better and better at what they're doing and Target is just another company that they're hitting," said Pelez.

Early Thursday morning, Target released a statement from the CEO reading, in part, "Target's first priority is preserving the trust of our guests and we have moved swiftly to address this issue, so guests can shop with confidence."

As a customer, Pelez plans to remain loyal despite the security shake-up.

"I'll continue to shop because it's happening everywhere," said Pelez.  "I think Target is going to learn its lesson. It's going to become a better company because of this."

As you leave the Target store, shoppers advise check your bags...and your balance.

"Just watch yourself. Be careful ... that's all. Just check your balance and your statement as you're going into Target," said shopper Elaine Hazelwood.

If you think your credit card information has been accessed, call 866.852.8680.

Although some customers are running into problems with busy signals and hang-ups, Target is adding extra staff to try to address the issue with the phone lines.
