The University of Minnesota sent out a Crime Alert Monday after a student was robbed while he was studying.

According to the Crime Alert, the student was studying in the atrium of the Carlson School of Management Sunday at about 3:30 p.m. when a suspect demanded his laptop. The suspect said he had a gun, but didn't show a weapon.

The student gave his laptop to the suspect. He then called for help and the suspect was chased. During the chase, the suspect dropped the computer and the student was able to get it back. The student was not injured.

The suspect is described as a black male, five feet, six inches to 5 feet 8" tall with a medium build and unshaven facial hair. He was wearing a navy blue hoodie, dark colored jeans, distinctive shoes with white on the top half and red on the lower half, and had silver caps on his lower front teeth.

According to the Crime Alert, the suspect likely had an accomplice waiting at the front of the building.

Anyone with information is asked to call the University of Minnesota Police Department at 612-624-COPS (2677) and reference case number UM-13-415394.

This latest incident comes during a rise in crime in the area this fall semester. In November, a suspect tried to kidnap a student on campus.

A student was also recently kidnapped near campus by someone impersonating an officer and was sexually assaulted.

The U of M has increased patrols in the area due to the rise in crime.
