Two men escaped from a vehicle that went through the ice Wednesday on an icy lake near Alexandria.

The incident occurred on Lake Ida in Douglas County. Both men were able to escape from the vehicle without injuries, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

The DNR is reminding residents that ice is never 100 percent safe.

The DNR clear ice thickness recommendations are:

  • 4" for walking
  • 5" for a snowmobile or ATV
  • 8-12" for a car
  • 12-15" for a medium-sized truck
  • When the temperature rises above freezing for six of the last 24 hours, double the recommended minimum thickness

According to the DNR, if it stays above freezing for 24 hours or more, stay off the ice.
