The warmest part of the day Tuesday was 5 a.m. when temperatures climbed to 11 degrees above zero. KSTP.com meteorologist Dave Dahl says temperatures will continue to plummet into the night.

A Wind Chill Advisory is in effect for a portion of Minnesota including the metro area. There is also a Wind Chill Advisory in effect for parts of western Wisconsin.

Dave says this will be one of the coldest nights of the year with wind chills dropping to around 20 to 25 degrees below zero in southern Minnesota, with readings expected as low as 35 degrees below zero in the northern part of the state.

Although the condition of roadways has improved since Monday, there are still icy spots. The Minnesota State Patrol responded Tuesday to 173 crashes and 179 vehicles off the roadway or vehicle spin outs since 6 a.m.

Wind chills will be around 25 degrees below zero Wednesday morning while kids are waiting at bus stops.
