A mass for the Lakeville teenager killed in a car crash on her way to school during last week’s winter storm is began at 11 a.m. Tuesday.

A visitation for 16-year-old Alyssa Ettl was held from 5-8 p.m. at All Saints Catholic Church in Lakeville.

Alyssa was a junior at Lakeville North High School. Principal Marne Berkvam released a statement saying in part, "[Alyssa] will be deeply missed by friends and family. The district implemented the Crisis Response Plan to offer support to staff and students. Please keep the family in your thoughts and prayers."

According to Lakeville Police, Alyssa was driving on Dodd Boulevard south of 190th Street in Lakeville Wednesday when she lost control of the vehicle. The road was covered in slush at the time of the crash.

Her vehicle slid sideways and was hit by a GMC Acadia. The driver and the passenger in the GMC Acadia suffered minor injuries.

Everyone involved in the crash was wearing their seat belts, according to police.

The road was closed for several hours while authorities investigated the crash.

Alyssa's friends tell KSTP she was a soccer player and president of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Her best friend, Sammie, said Alyssa was told on Tuesday she would be captain of next year's soccer team.

Students like Jacob Belcourt learned the hard lesson about how short life can be. "It's absolutely terrible; no one should have to go through this kind of thing."

Berkvam said coping with the sudden loss has been difficult for all students. "What it teaches them is to appreciate each other because life can be short, and don't take any day for granted because you never know when you might lose a friend."
