Veterans who have committed crimes are now getting a second chance.
Veterans Court Track, a program that launched Friday in Ramsey County, is part of the overall Ramsey County Veterans Justice Initiative. If a veteran is charged with a crime in Ramsey County and is having problems readjusting to civilian life, the initiative will allow them to go through a rehabilitation program instead of going through the traditional route involving the justice system.
The program length for misdemeanor offenses is nine months, and the minimum length for gross misdemeanors and felonies is one year.
The initiative is a joint effort with city, county, state, federal and community leaders. Eligible offenders must live in Ramsey County and have a treatable behavioral, mental or chemical health problem.
