An Elk River apartment complex was evacuated Thursday morning as crews battled a fire that spread throughout Evans Meadows Apartments.

Officials said the fire started on a patio of an apartment before spreading through the complex, which was located in the 300 block of Evans Avenue Northwest.

The fire was initially reported around 6:25 a.m.

The cold temperatures challenged first responders because of the water's additional load on an already weakened structure, according to officials. Firefighters also had to take shorter work cycles to battle the flames.

"Due to the wind and extreme weather today, it did carry the fire throughout the building quite rapidly," John Cunningham, Elk River Fire Chief, said.

Cunningham said there was a collapse on the third floor of the building.

A KSTP crew on the scene learned about 20 adults were displaced. No injuries have been reported yet.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
