Minnesota's health insurance exchange has approved an additional $833,000 in grants to 12 organizations that will help people sign up for coverage under the new federal law.

MNsure officials announced the new grants Wednesday. The agency previously allocated $3.9 million in outreach grants to 29 organizations, but that initial group drew criticism from some Democratic lawmakers for underrepresenting organizations that serve black Minnesotans and Somali immigrants.

The new list of grantees does include a number of those groups, including $100,000 for the Minneapolis Urban League. In all, new grantee groups include three that pledge to target blacks, two that target Latinos, and one each that target American Indians and new immigrants.

MNsure says the 41 groups now getting outreach money should together reach about 420,000 Minnesotans.
