A 40-year-old Richfield woman is charged with second degree murder in the stabbing death of her husband.
According to the criminal complaint, Amerya Shefa stabbed her husband about 30 times during an argument Sunday morning. Officers were called to the 7300 block of 12th Avenue South on a report of an assault-in-progress around 5 a.m. Officers spoke with two individuals when they arrived to the home.
Officers found Shefa with blood on her hands, yelling hysterically in a different language about her husband and children, the criminal complaint states. Officers eventually learned a man and two small children were still inside the home.
When officers entered the home they saw blood in the kitchen and on the door. They found two young children inside and had to coax them out of a bedroom.
After officers removed the children from the home, they continued searching for the man who was supposed to be inside. Officers heard water running in the bathroom and kicked in the door.
According to the criminal complaint, officers found the man in the bathtub nude, only wearing socks and covered in blood. He appeared to have multiple stab wounds. Two knifes were found in the tub with the victim, later identified by neighbors as 48-year-old Habibi Tesema. Officers tried to resuscitate him, but where unsuccessful.
Shefa was brought to Hennepin County Medical center for a cut on her hand. She told nurses she stabbed her husband because he was drinking and taking the drug khat, the criminal complaint states.
Later she admitted to stabbing her husband because he wanted to bring another woman into their bedroom and wished to use a sexual device on her, according to the complaint. She told police she stabbed him in the chest and when he went to grab the knife from her, she cut her hand. After the victim saw she had a cut to her hand, he dropped the knife. Shefa admitted to grabbing a second knife and stabbing him multiple times in the front and back.
According to an autopsy by the medical examiner, there were about 30 cuts or stab wounds to the victim. One stab wound to the left side of his chest hit his heart, causing his death, the complaint states.
A witness told police the couple had been fighting for the past seven months. The witness also said he heard Shefa tell her husband she was going to stab him and kill him.
