The city of St. Paul is voting on a new ordinance Wednesday that could make it easier to open a micro-brewery.

City Council Member Dave Thune tells 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS that opening a micro-brewery in a neighborhood that is zoned residential is not allowed, but the new ordinance would change that and allow a brewpub in a residential neighborhood.

Thune says allowing this change is "good for everyone in the city because it creates jobs, increases sales and property tax revenues and is fun." Thune says there is little, if any, opposition to the proposed ordinance. He says, "it will also allow developers to buy and refurbish otherwise derelict properties into something useful."

The city created "brewpub zones" earlier this year and Thune says it makes sense to take this next step to keep St. Paul vibrant and give people something new to try while creating business opportunities at the same time.

Thune says many of the city's wards cannot allow new bars to open because they have reached their limit for those types of businesses. But Thune says, "we have found microbreweries do not create some of the problems you get with stand-alone bars. They are more of a social-gathering place and tend to have fewer problems and we welcome that and are willing to allow their expansion into areas where bars could not go up."
