Cost of phase one of the construction of the $38-million Lowertown Baseball Park, home to the St. Paul Saints, has exceeded St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman's expectations.

At the Lowertown Ballpark Business Inclusion outreach event Tuesday, Coleman said the businesses working on site are reflective of a diverse community.

The city set goals for locally owned companies working on the site, including women and minority-owned businesses, as well as small businesses, Coleman said.

Ryan Companies, the construction developer, was cited as a major reason for this.

"One of the reasons we picked Ryan on this project is that they have an aggressive track record of not only meeting their goals, but exceeding their goals," Coleman said.

The construction was temporarily delayed in early September after a heavy equipment operator of Rachel Construction, a sub-contractor for Ryan Cos., was killed during a partial building collapse. The site was shut down and the incident was investigated by the Minnesota Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

The investigation is ongoing. No public details will be released until the conclusion of the investigation, per OSHA policy.
