While treats are on the mind of most Americans this Halloween, local students are proving it's also important to remember the need for food.

One in eight Americans depend on food banks.

On Thursday, students from around the metro showed up at Second Harvest in Golden Valley to do their part.

Some of the students were in costumes when they dropped off the thousands of pounds of food they've been collecting in their schools and neighborhoods over the past month.

It's in support of 'Free the Children's We Scare Hunger' campaign, made possible by General Mills.

In 2012 alone, students and other volunteers helped Second Harvest collect and distribute more than 76 million pounds of food.
