Family and friends in Brooklyn Park are mourning the death of a 22-year-old man.
Willie Smith, of St. Paul, was fatally shot outside the Blue Nile restaurant and bar about 2 a.m. Saturday. Another man was shot in the leg.
Jerri Searcy was Smith's foster mother for about 10 years. She tells 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS, "Willie was a great kid and a hardworking student." In high school he made National Honor Roll for academic achievement. As a junior in high school, Willie interned at Dorsey & Whitney. He had acted as a guest speaker at various Volunteers of America events.
Searcy says Smith, who is the father of a 2-month-old girl, was set to graduate from Augsburg next spring.
A North Dakota college football player who was a standout athlete at a Minnesota high school has been charged with fatally shooting Smith.
The Jamestown Sun reports Cedric Chappell Jr. was arrested Tuesday at Valley City State University. He is charged in Hennepin County, Minn., with second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder. He's being held in the Barnes County jail.
A criminal complaint says a fight started inside the bar, spilled out into the parking lot and two groups started shooting at each other.
