The Minnesota Twins have agreed on a two-year contract for manager Ron Gardenhire, the team reported Monday.

The contract is scheduled to end in 2015. Gardenhire, 55, was named manager of the Twins on Jan. 4, 2002. He has a career record of 998-947 (.513) as a major league manager.

The statement confirmed reports that began circling Monday about the contract extension. In addition, the Twins coaching staff will be invited back for the 2014 season.

Gardenhire trails only Tom Kelly on the Twins All-Time win list of 1,140. Gardenhire earned the American League Manager of the Year award in 2010 and was named by fellow managers as The Sporting News Manager of the Year that season.

The Twins held a news conference at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Target Field to announce the extension. Twins CEO Jim Pohlad, president Dave St. Peter, executive vice president and general manager Terry Ryan and manager Ron Gardenhire participated in the news conference.

Gardenhire is in the final year of his contract. The team had another rough season this year, finishing with 96 losses.
