Two people are confirmed dead at an Eden Prairie apartment building on Saturday, according to police.
Officers responded to a report of shots fired around 7 a.m. inside an apartment in a building located in the 8600 block of Magnolia Trail.
The Eden Prairie police SWAT team and officers from five other nearby suburban departments surrounded the building. Roughly 63 other units were then evacuated as a precaution.
Maria Martinez lives in the building with her husband and three children. They waited roughly five hours before police said they could return to their apartment.
"I just grabbed a few things for them - formula and water and bottles - and that's it," she said. "It is really shocking, I think. It's a really nice community."
Police initially found a woman dead inside the apartment. As a precaution a Bloomington bomb squad robot was sent further into the apartment. A man's body was found. Police also found weapons inside the apartment, but would not confirm what kind.
Police confirmed shots were fired. The identities of the two people and the cause of death will be released through the Hennepin County medical examiner's office.
"It's very rare. It's very unfortunate. It's a tragic event," said Eden Prairie Police Lt. Greg Weber. "It's certainly disheartening to us, but what we're going to do our darnedest to find out what took place and find out answers."
Witnesses were being interviewed by police late Saturday afternoon. No suspects are being sought and there is no danger to the public, according to police.
