A man - who was involved in a tumultuous relationship - has been arrested after a woman he was dating was found dead behind a building in St. Louis Park.
Walter Thompson III, 54, of Minneapolis was arrested Wednesday after police determined that the woman found, Nerissa Annette Shaw, 46, had been involved in a long and violent relationship with Thompson, St. Louis Park police reported.
Shaw's body was found Tuesday lying behind a building in a wooded area adjacent to the railroad tracks near the 5001 block of Cedar Lake Road. The woman's body, which was wrapped in a sheet, displayed injuries consistent with a severe beating, particularly on and about the face and head, police reported.
The couple had a frequent history of domestic violence in their relationship, police stated. Also, Thompson is on probation for violating an order for protection involving Shaw. It was unclear whether the couple was currently in a relationship, police said.
Various police agencies began searching known locations for Thompson. Shortly before 1 p.m. Wednesday, St. Louis Park police arrested him at 15 E. Grant St. in Minneapolis. Thompson was taken into custody without incident or resistance.
Police continue to investigate the case, which will be submitted to the Hennepin County Attorney for possible charges in the next few days. Thompson is currently in custody on suspicion of second-degree homicide.
According to state criminal records, Thompson has several convictions, including gross misdemeanor domestic assault in 2012 and fifth-degree assault in 2002.
