Nicollet Mall, a pedestrian and transit corridor in downtown Minneapolis, is entering the first phase of a redesign.

A public event Tuesday, Sept. 17, at the Guthrie Theater kicked off the project with the release of three design teams. The groups, which have been selected from more than 20 submissions worldwide, will present their visions for the Mall at the event.

A panel of 13 expert judges will review the submissions and announce their decisions Thursday.

The project is being led by the city of Minneapolis and the Minneapolis Downtown Council. Construction is expected to begin in spring 2015 with estimated completion in 2016. The following is information about Nicollet Mall, according to the project's leaders:

About Nicollet Mall

Since the 1880s, Nicollet Mall has been a retail and business hub for Minneapolis. Over the years, "Minnesota's Main Street" has been through two major renovations - 1965 and later in the 1980s. Today the space is home to events such as the Nicollet Mall Farmers' Market and the annual Holidazzle Parade and a thoroughfare for more than 140,000 Minnesotans daily.

The 12-block stretch is home to hundreds of businesses, retail stores, restaurants and entertainment venues. But decades of heavy wear and weather extremes have accelerated the deterioration of Nicollet Mall, and the street isn't keeping pace with the thriving development and expansion that marks modern Minneapolis, according to city officials.

Nicollet Mall by the Numbers:

  • 140,000 employees use Nicollet Mall daily
  • More than 34 million square feet of office space
  • Three Fortune 500 companies are headquartered on the Mall (U.S. Bank, Wells Fargo and Target)
  • More than 13,000 new permanent jobs anticipated to be created as a result of this project
  • 22,000 construction jobs anticipated over the next decade
  • 35,000 current downtown Minneapolis residents
  • By 2025, the goal is to have 70,000 Downtown Minneapolis residents

About The Project

What problems need to be solved?

  • Poorly functioning electrical and irrigation systems
  • Failing paver system causes water to seep into adjacent buildings' basements
  • Escalating maintenance costs to deal with granite pavers that are cracking and heaving
