One of the first competitions around the new St. Paul Saints ballpark has nothing to do with baseball. It's about art.

The city of St. Paul is seeking artists to deck out the stadium and fulfill an ordinance that requires one percent of certain project costs to go for public art. In this case, the grant pool is $170,000 and there's a Monday deadline for artists to make their pitches.

The panel judging submissions is putting an emphasis on art that is interactive and reflective of Lowertown, where the new 7,000-seat stadium is being built.

After Monday's entry deadline, a shortlist will be developed by week's end. From there, successful artists will be chosen by early October.

The publicly subsidized minor league ballpark is slated to open in 2015.
