A St. Paul man is accused of killing a woman while they were having rough sex.
Sammy Devel Henderson, 24, was charged with two counts of second-degree murder in Ramsey County District Court, according to a criminal complaint.
The 30-year-old woman, Sherell Montrese Craighead, asked her 7-year-old son to call 911 during the assault at her apartment on Minnehaha Avenue, the complaint said. The boy, however, couldn't find a phone and went to sleep. In the morning, he went to his grandmother's house.
His grandmother later took the boy back to his apartment, where he said his mother was bleeding and sleeping naked on the floor, the complaint said. The boy told police that his mother's friend, Sammy, was visiting her the night before.
Henderson later talked to police about the incident.
He said Craighead and him had a casual sexual relationship. He later admitted to visiting Craighead on Aug. 31, and they had anal sex and drank, the complaint said. He said they stopped having anal sex when Craighead said it hurt. He also told police that he had his left arm around Craighead's neck while they were having sex.
Henderson denied knowing that Craighead was dead when he left her. He thought she had gone to sleep. "I knew that she was limp, but I didn't know she was dead. I know I left her … open, exposed, but not 'out,'" he told police, according to the complaint.
According to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office, Craighead's death was homicide from asphyxia due to manual strangulation. A bone in her neck also was broken.
