Suspect ID'd After Officer-Involved Shooting in New Brighton

Authorities have identified the suspect and officer who were involved in a shooting in New Brighton Tuesday.

The suspect has been identified as 45-year-old Matthew Lloyd Vanhofwegen and the officer has been identified as Joseph Steiner with the Maplewood Police Department.

According to authorities, the Ramsey County Violent Crime Enforcement Team was serving a narcotics search warrant Tuesday around 2 p.m. at a home in the 1500 block of 20th Avenue Northwest.

According to the BCA, Vanhofwegen allegedly grabbed the barrel of Steiner's rife. There was a struggle and Steiner shot Vanhofwegen.

Vanhofwegen was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center where he underwent surgery. He is in stable condition.

Steiner is an eight-year veteran of the Maplewood Police Department. He has been placed on standard administrative leave. 

The BCA is investigating the shooting.
