Annual Run/Walk Honors Officers Killed in the Line of Duty
The Race for the Fallen honors Minnesota's fallen officers as well as the heroes they left behind.
"It is beyond description how you go through that first year," said Bonnie Silvera. "Just trying to understand what happened."
Silvera's son, Lino Lakes Officer Shawn Silvera, was killed in the line of duty in 2005.
"Shawn was killed on a highway, 35W, as he was putting out stop sticks for a felon," she said.
Silvera is one of the 231 people and three K9 units whose names lined the 5K course in Woodbury - all Minnesota officers killed in the line of duty.
"It's way too many," said Crystal Peterson.
Peterson's uncle, St. Paul Police Sgt. Gerald Vick, was shot and killed in 2005 during an undercover investigation.
"It's one of those things that you never forget the day that it happened," said Peterson.
And that's what this event is all about. Remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
"I continue to be there for the next survivors," said Silvera. "We are survivors helping other survivors."
"It's just nice to feel that comfort," said Peterson.
