Neighbors: Lottery Winners are Hardworking, Kindhearted
Marlys Petry has lived on her two acres of land since 1969. For the past several years, Paul White and his girlfriend, Kim, have lived across the street with their family. She says they are the best neighbors.
"When my mother was sick and stuff they took care of the dogs for me. You couldn't ask for better neighbors," Petry said.
Marlys says she found out White won the lottery when a former neighbor who moved to Florida called her and told her.
"I'm so glad for them, I really am," Petry said.
Petry says if there is anything she wants people to know about Paul and Kim, it's that they are hard-working, kind-hearted people, with a house full of kids that are loved.
"They are very family-oriented. They're baseball, they're football, they got kids in all these sports," Petry said.
Paul and Kim live in Ham Lake near the end of a cul-de-sac. There are just more than 15,000 residents in Ham Lake, which is straight north of Minneapolis.
It's a place where people know each other, for the most part.
Brian Paal is Paul and Kim's next-door neighbor. He says he's sure his little town will get some serious attention now.
"The media won't last, it's going to come and go; news is fleeting," Paal said.
Paal says he doesn't see the money or the attention that comes with it will change Paul and Kim. He believes they will be the same neighbors that wave when you drive by.
"Last night they were playing baseball on the side of their house, and I drove by and waved. They waved back just like always, and now today, wow, $58 million," Paal said.
