Surveillance Program Credited with Mpls Solving Mystery

Police credit mobile surveillance cameras with helping them identify and arrest two people in connection with a shooting inside a downtown Minneapolis restaurant.

The city has 17 mobile camera units. Police can rapidly redeploy them to areas of concern or other locations like sporting events and concerts.

The cameras are manufactured by West Saint Paul based Mobile Pro Systems. The units are battery powered but also use generator, wind, and solar power to run a variety of attachments atop thirty foot towers.

Besides cameras, weather radar equipment, audio systems, and flood lights can be mounted and used for a variety of purposes.

The company has sold several hundred units which are being used nationwide. Mobile Pro Systems says the units will be used at the next Super Bowl and possibly along the U.S.-Mexico border in the event a federal immigration overhaul bill becomes law.
