Eighteen mayors across the United States, including Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak, are reviving a push to stop sugary drinks from being bought with food stamps.

The group sent a letter to congressional leaders Tuesday saying the push is to fight obesity and other diseases. The mayors say that restricting subsidies for sugar-laden beverages will strengthen the food stamp program and promote good nutrition.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg questions why food stamps can be used for items with no nutritional value like sugary drinks that are actually harming the health of participants.

However, not everyone sees it that way.

The American Beverage Association rebutted that allegation, claiming sugary drinks shouldn’t be singled out as a cause of obesity and calling obesity a complex health condition that affects Americans of all income levels.
