A Minnesota National Guard soldier who was battling cancer died Thursday.

Lt. Col. Mark Weber was surrounded by his family and friends when he died.

Weber wrote the best selling book "Tell My Sons," sharing the lessons he wanted his sons to know before his death. He visited KSTP-TV studios in March to talk about his book.

Weber was awarded the Legion of Merit medal for outstanding service to the military and to the nation. The medal was awarded by Gen. Martin Dempsey,  Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington, D.C.

Weber, a father of three, was diagnosed with advanced cancer two years ago just before he was supposed to deploy to Afghanistan.
